New MARVEL Feature!

From the Maine State Library:

The MARVEL databases added a new single search option July 2014. The feature lets you use keyword search across all of the information files included in MARVEL at once. It also provides a title search of full text magazines, newspapers and reference sources across the files.

Search results include encyclopedias, peer reviewed journals, popular magazines, newspapers and MaineCat our statewide library catalog. A basic keyword search will, in most cases, return thousands of results. The search result page allows you to see these as well as a variety of ways to narrow your search by date, source type or content provider. Book and newspaper results are listed separately from other results in the left hand column. Normal search tricks like using quotation marks around a phrase also help to narrow a search, for example Maine State Library without quotes returns 192,285 results "Maine State Library" in quotes gives 1, 048 results.

A separate tab is used to search for specific titles. Magazine, reference books and newspapers can be searched by title keywords. All iterations of the title in the MARVEL databases are returned.

Advanced searchers may still want to begin with the specific source files which best cover their subject area. For the general search the keyword search feature does a good job of leading to relevant, well organized results.
